Things have calmed down considerably since WFAN host Evan Roberts made comments insinuating that the hot start to the Tampa Bay Rays wasn’t legitimate. But apparently one self-proclaimed Rays fan is still livid with Roberts’s take.
Co-host Craig Carton posted on Twitter on Thursday a photo of a hand-written nastygram, in which the anonymous author called Carton and Roberts a variety of names, including “morons,” “ugly and uglier,” and “sore losing babies.” The letter also said Carton & Roberts should be glad the writer doesn’t live in New York. The person added they’d tell both hosts how he really feels to their faces.
Carton read the letter on the air on Carton and Roberts, obviously censoring the profanity and the use of a homophobic slur.
“And that’s how my day began,” Carton said.
“That’s a letter, man,” Roberts responded. “I’m just impressed that he didn’t make any jokes about someone named Butch. I’m pleased about that. Or Bubba.”
Craig seemed somewhat impressed that there were apparently fans of the Rays that are so die-hard for the team that they took the time to write the note and mail it to the station.
“That is a commitment to Tampa Rays baseball that I, honest to God, didn’t think existed,” he said.
Roberts did mention that in the 23 games since Tampa’s hot start, the team has gone 12-11. They still lead the AL East by four games over Baltimore and six over the Yankees.
“Just saying! That’s it, just saying!” Roberts said, implying that the Rays don’t look like the world beaters they were made out to be in the first month of the season. “Just giving you some numbers.”
