John Lund Encourages Listeners to Get Colonoscopies After Cancer Scare

John Lund doesn’t want to hear the jokes. He wants to hear that men are taking their health seriously. On his podcast Sunday, Lund revealed that he had been off KNBR for slightly over a week recovering from surgery.

I don’t normally look great, but I really don’t look great now because I just had this procedure on Monday,” he said on the latest episode of John Lund Unleashed. “I just spent a week in the hospital, just got back Friday night and I am mentally and physically recovering. I don’t need sympathy. That’s not why I’m doing this. I’m just simply saying it’s going to take me a couple more days because I’m not in the best of shape right now.”

Following a colonoscopy, Lund says that his doctor found a spot that concerned him. It was revealed to the San Francisco radio host when he was still a bit groggy.

“Well, in my foggy state with my wife standing right next to me, he said to me we might have cancer here. And you kind of look to your wife and you say, Did. Did he say cancer? Because I thought he’d said, you’re good to go see in five years. Now, you said we might have cancer here.”

He shared good news with the audience.

“I get a text from my doctor this morning being Sunday, and he says to me, we got it in the nick of time.”

Lund has a history of cancer in his family. He shared a story about his father, whose cancer was not discovered until it was too late to treat.

For men, that situation can be avoided with a colonoscopy. It was something Lund said he was encouraged to do by his KNBR colleague FP Santangelo. He said that he hopes all of the jokes about colonoscopies don’t discourage people from actually taking care of themselves.

“As men it’s gotten overblown and we’re too macho about it and we don’t do this,” he said. “All of a sudden, people say dumb shit, like, you know, ‘I’d rather I’d rather not know if I have cancer.’ No, no, no, no, no. You want to know and you want to know as early as possible.”
