Beleaguered pitcher Trevor Bauer’s defamation lawsuit against The Athletic and a former reporter at the publication is over.
Front Office Sports senior reporter A.J. Perez reported on Tuesday that the litigation has been settled. Bauer sued reporter Molly Knight and The Athletic after she posted tweets about Bauer and allegations of physical abuse and sexual assault.
Despite not being charged with a crime, Bauer was suspended for two seasons by Major League Baseball for violating the league’s domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy. But the suspension was reduced to 194 games in December. Bauer was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers in January. He’s been pitching in the Japanese minor leagues this season.
As part of the stipulation in the settlement, Knight’s tweets have been removed, and The Athletic had published a clarification on past reporting of Bauer’s allegations. The clarification read in part that The Athletic didn’t intend to state or imply that the alleged victim was injured by Bauer.
Late last year, Bauer saw his lawsuit against Deadspin dismissed.
