Texas Longhorns Move Flagship to iHeartMedia Austin Stations

A day after 104.9 The Horn revealed it would be dropping sports talk as its format, iHeartMedia Austin’s 1300 The Zone has picked up the broadcast rights to University of Texas athletics.

Radio Insight reported Thursday that 1300 The Zone and Country 98.1 KVET will be the new flagship stations for Longhorn football and men’s basketball. Radio coverage plans for women’s basketball, baseball, softball, as well as Spanish broadcasts, will be announced later.

The Horn became the flagship home for Texas sports in 2016. It took over the rights from KVET.

“The move of our network’s flagship radio station to KVET is a huge win for our fans in Austin and central Texas,” Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte said in a statement. “No matter where you are in that footprint, you’ll get your Horns loud and clear from kickoff, tipoff or first pitch. Then you add the cherry on top to this deal with our network’s partnership with the mighty brand of iHeartMedia, and we’ve hit a home run in every way.”
