Don La Greca: I’m Sick of Interviews With Managers

The New York Yankees and the New York Mets continue to slog through their 2023 seasons, and ESPN New York host Don La Greca is over hearing from managers Aaron Boone and Buck Showalter about their respective club’s struggles.

He opened Wednesday’s episode of The Michael Kay Show after a long clip of Boone offering wishful thinking and how things will come together soon for a Yankees team that is sitting in last place in the AL East a week removed from the all-star break.

“I don’t want to hear from managers anymore,” La Greca said. “I don’t want to hear Buck saying, ‘It’s hard to get hitters out in the major leagues. It’s really hard to get a major league hitter out.’ And then Boone’s like, ‘It’s gonna happen. All is well!'”

The Mets’ struggles have been even more of a disappointment considering how big a mover the franchise was in free agency. There were high expectations that the Mets would be contending for another playoff spot this season, but that hasn’t panned out so far.

La Greca said he was sick of listening to Showalter constantly make excuses for his team about the degree of difficulty involved with recording an out.

“I know it’s hard! That’s why it’s the major leagues. That’s why we watch, cause it’s hard,” he said. “If it was easy we wouldn’t watch! If it was easy we’d all do it.”

An Aaron Boone montage was played, which would crescendo into a hodgepodge of Boone sound. Eventually, on the other side of the clip, La Greca finished his point about managers.

“I don’t want to hear them,” he said. “Really, I’m tired of the excuses, the yo-yo stuff.”
