The landscape of the National Football League (NFL) underwent a long-awaited change yesterday with the league’s approval for the sale of the Washington Commanders to Josh Harris and his limited partners. The moment officially ended the tenuous ownership period of Daniel Snyder, who was subsequently fined $60 million after the completion of an independent investigation. Fans of the team were ecstatic with the move as Harris seemingly subjugates the team from perceived peril.
Upon securing the rights to purchase the team, Harris called into Grant and Danny on 106.7 The Fan. The show was broadcasting live from the Old Ox Brewery, and upon reaching the new owner, fans inside the bar made their voices heard. Clearly, fans were in a jovial mood with the change – and Harris decided to reward them for their enthusiasm. Over the phone – without knowing the exact size of the crowd on hand – Harris decided to pick up the entire tab.
“I’m just leaving the league meeting, and I knew there was a party and a bunch of Washington fans there,” Harris said. “I’m super pumped, it’s a great day for Washington football and I’m ready to get to work. I’m heading your way; I want to get back to Washington, my hometown, and celebrate with you guys. Let’s get started by me buying everyone in the brewery and The Bullpen a beer. Can we do that?”
“Are you kidding?,” co-host Grant Paulsen said. “I love that. That’s a good start; that’s an anti-Dan Synder move!”
The Burgundy and Sold party was taking place at The Bullpen, meaning there would be a sizable tab for Harris to pick up. Yesterday, Harris officially received clearance to purchase the franchise for a record $6.05 billion. While the tab was surely less than that, he did not hesitate to make it happen.
“I’m going to have to dip into my savings, but I want everyone to have a beer,” Harris said. “Let’s do it! Hail to the Commanders, and drink up!”
