There will be another alternate broadcast in the football landscape, specifically for New England Patriots preseason games. Twin brothers and current sports media personalities Devin and Jason McCourty played together on the Patriots and won a Super Bowl championship, and now they will be teaming up on a new endeavor. The McCourtys are going to discuss the games on The McCourty Twin Cast for three preseason games, the first of which takes place this Thursday night against the Houston Texans. These broadcasts will be produced by the Patriots organization and will be streamed live on both the team’s website and on the WBZ-4 website, the local station set to carry the traditional broadcast. The Aug. 19 “Twincast” against the Green Bay Packers is also going to air on linear television station WSKB-38, which is an independent CBS-owned outlet.
Alternate broadcasts will emanate from Jason’s New Jersey home and feature a range of guests to supplement the game. The McCourty twins are following a similar template to what has made Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli, colloquially known as the “ManningCast,” a revolutionary success. The news was first reported by Chad Finn of The Boston Globe, outlining why Jason and Devin decided to team up on this project. After all, both have their own media roles to fulfill throughout the football season on NFL Network and NBC Sports, respectively.
Both twins currently co-host a podcast with each other titled, Double Coverage, where they bring perspective and opinion to the sport at large. Now they will be seeking to foster the chemistry they built growing up on the field and behind the microphone to inform and entertain Patriots fans as they seek to engender a natural aesthetic.
“When people watch it, we want them to feel like they’re just watching it with their friends – with two of your friends that used to play,” Devin McCoutry told The Boston Globe. “That’s the atmosphere and vibe we want to create with it rather than seeming rehearsed or saying, ‘Okay, we’re going to say this on first down and this on second down…’”
Matt Smith, the senior executive producer of Patriots preseason games, told the McCourty twins about his idea of creating this unparalleled viewing experience. They did not take much time to think it over, opting to oblige towards the unique opportunity to make history and change the way football is broadcast year-round.
“I can’t think of a better pairing for the NFL’s first team-produced alternate programming than Devin and Jason,” Smith said. “The two have literally spent their entire lives together. They played football together. They played football together, hosted a podcast; they’re great on social media and funny, thoughtful people who have tremendous institutional knowledge about the Patriots. It makes all the sense in the world to do this.”
