The first Republican Presidential debate is fast approaching. 710 WOR host Mark Simone says Fox News knows that the debate doesn’t hold much gravitas without former President Donald Trump.
Reports have surfaced that Fox News executives have met with Trump to plead their case for why he should appear in Milwaukee on August 23rd. The former President has previously stated he gains nothing by debating the other assembled candidates. He has also publicly shared his displeasure with Fox News over its coverage of him, going as far to call it a “hostile network” in an interview with Breitbart.
On The Mark Simone Show Wednesday, Mr. New York argued that it is in Fox’s best interest to convince Trump to join the debate because a side event hosted by the former President would draw potential viewers away.
“If Trump’s not there, he did hint that he might do another event at exactly the same time,” said Simone. “Probably just online but that could get millions and millions and millions of people watching, distracting from the debate. And without Trump in the debate, you’d have lower ratings anyway.”
Simone continued by mentioning that Trump was likely right in his assertation that he has nothing to gain by debating, adding that a candidate like Vivek Ramaswamy will likely see a surge after the Milwaukee event.
