The Radio Television Digital News Association has announced the national winners of the 2023 Edward R. Murrow Awards.
In the overall radio excellence awards, three winners were designated with the honors.
WCHS MetroNews Radio in Charleston, West Virginia was named the small market radio group of the year. Texas Public Radio News, based in San Antonio, was given the same honor for the large market category. Finally, ABC News Radio was honored for its excellence in radio news broadcasts as the Radio Network of the Year.
“The Edward R. Murrow Awards remind us that journalism is a powerful force for truth and accountability,” said RTDNA chairman Tim Scheld. “These awards honor those who courageously navigate the complexities of our world to deliver stories that matter, stories that resonate, and stories that uphold the integrity of our profession.”
iHeartMedia’s WBZ in Boston won an award in the Excellence in Innovation category for its creative use of TikTok.
“We are always looking to broaden our brand awareness and with this award, we can proudly say WBZ NewsRadio is the number one station in the nation for innovation,” WBZ Director of Programming and Operations Bill Flaherty said.
Audacy’s WBBM in Chicago won the breaking news category for its coverage of the Highland Park mass shooting. Meanwhile, sister station KDKA in Pittsburgh was honored for its feature reporting surrounding the struggle to recruit new firefighters in the city.
KMOX’s Total Information AM was awarded the top honor for best newscast. The St. Louis news/talk station’s reporting from October 25th was submitted as the victor.
