Mike Florio: ‘NFL Network Has to Fire Michael Irvin or Put Him on TV’

What is Michael Irvin’s employment status? At ESPN, nothing is official, but signs point to him being replaced on First Take by Shannon Sharpe. At the NFL Network, things are a bit more murky.

The Playmaker is still employed, but he remains suspended after accusations that he engaged in inappropriate conduct with a woman at a hotel in Arizona during the Super Bowl.

Mike Florio says Irvin deserves some answers from the network.

“At some point you’ve got to end this,” he said on 105.3 The Fan’s Shan & RJ Friday morning. “At some point, you got to move forward. You’ve got to cut the guy loose or you got to put him back on the air. And I’d like to think before the regular season that would be the case. Who knows?”

Florio admitted that while none of us know for sure what happened, he does feel bad to see Irvin put in a sort of holding pattern. The former attorney offered Irvin some advice.

“At some point, you’ve got to look at your contract with NFL Network and you got to say, ‘I have rights here and you can’t just put me on ice indefinitely. You have to do something with me, cut me loose, put me back to work. But we just can’t be in this limbo that has now lasted four months.’ So it’s strange.”

Shan Shariff asked Florio if there is any way to know how the legal case looks for Irvin.

Florio says there really isn’t. While everyone has questions and theories, the public won’t know which side has what until the case goes to trial or is settled.

He added that every so often over the last four months, various outlets have reported that Irvin remains suspended. He re-iterated the fact that it doesn’t mean there is any new information to report.
