Change is coming to Barstool now that Dave Portnoy owns the company outright once again, and it’s going to start in the media outlet’s sales department.
Portnoy said in a recent Barstool video that now that he’s had a chance to sit down and meet with the sales staff and figure out what things look like, he wants to rewrite how salespeople are paid so that there’s no cap put on their earning potential.
“Their comp plan was f–ked to me,” Portnoy said. “They should be making more money on their comp plan, less base salary. A lot of people may not make it.”
Dave added that he’s felt like there are too many people in the department already and that base salaries are hindering salespeople’s ability to go out and sell Barstool. He doesn’t want a limit on how much anyone working in sales can earn. Perhaps by rewriting the sales compensation plan that will thin out the herd, but he hopes the people that want to do well will be motivated by better commissions.
“Salespeople should be amongst the highest paid people at the company,” he said. “That’s uniform at every company. Salespeople make bank. They go out, they’re driven by money. And we gotta get to that. There should be more upside for them.”
