Mychael Urban has passed away. The Bay Area sports media personality was a regular presence on both of San Francisco’s sports radio stations as well as Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, which is now NBC Sports Bay Area. He was 55 years old at the time of his passing.
No official word has been given on the cause of his death. His brother Dan relayed the news in a social media post.
Urban played baseball at the University of San Francisco. He immediately began covering the sport, landing with MLB.com in 2001 to cover the Oakland As. Urban’s involvement covering the A’s led to writing a book, Aces: The Last Season on the Mound With The Oakland A’s Big Three – Tim Hudson, Barry Zito, and Mark Mulder.
He spent time as a part-time host on both KNBR and 95.7 The Game. ‘Urbs’ as he was affectionately known to Bay Area listeners was a regular presence during The Game’s launch, appearing frequently on The Wheelhouse with John Lund, Greg Papa, Matt Steinmetz and others.
As a writer, Urban also contributed to NBCOlympics.com, MLB.com, SF Examiner, FinalFour.com, Golf.com, and the Sports Movie Database.
He was born in San Francisco, grew up in Redwood City, and was recently living in Houston, TX. He leaves behind two daughters, Jackie and Natalie.
May Jackie and Natalie’s father rest in peace
