C-SPAN, the broadcaster focused on public affairs, has just unveiled a fresh app tailored for connected TV viewers. This app, named “C-SPAN Select,” will debut for approximately 12 million customers utilizing Comcast Xfinity’s X1 service.
According to The Hill, it is scheduled to roll out on Xfinity’s XFlex and Xumo platforms later this autumn. The network’s executives have also conveyed their plans to extend the service to other cable providers beyond Xfinity in the coming months.
C-SPAN provides a connected TV service that allows individuals without a traditional cable subscription to explore and view its diverse range of programs and live broadcasts, such as congressional hearings, speeches on the floor, and other significant public affairs events.
Peter Kiley, the Vice President for Affiliate Relations at C-SPAN, stated that the organization is aligning itself with audiences’ evolving preferences toward consumer-driven content. Having dedicated over four decades to broadcasting congressional and public affairs events, C-SPAN has taken substantial steps toward embracing a more digital-oriented future. Recently, the network introduced a mobile application called “C-SPAN Now” for both iPhone and Android devices, primarily featuring breaking news updates and short video clips.
The network’s coverage of government proceedings was most recently in the spotlight as a result of the unprecedented access it had to the House chamber in January as the GOP struggled to elect a Speaker due to a handful of members who withheld votes for Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)
Like numerous other cable channels, the outlet has expanded its streaming and digital offerings in response to the shift away from traditional cable subscriptions and the evolving media landscape. This shift is particularly noticeable in the realm of political and breaking news content.
