Former CBS News Radio General Manager Michael Freedman died earlier this week after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Freedman was named GM of the network in 1998 and persuaded Walter Cronkite to work for CBS News Radio for special coverage and voiceover work after his retirement.
Before joining the news network, Freedman oversaw the broadcast division of United Press International. He also worked as a press secretary on Capitol Hill and as the public affairs director at George Washington University, where he returned after his stint leading CBS.
In total, news organizations overseen by Freedman won 14 Edward R. Murrow Awards during his tenure.
Freedman is survived by his wife, two sons, a brother, and five grandchildren.
Michael Freedman was 71 years old.
