The founder of The Young Turks and former MSNBC/Current TV host, Cenk Uygur, has announced his intention to challenge President Joe Biden for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination.
On Wednesday, Uygur revealed his bid for the White House as a guest on a show hosted by Ana Kasparian on his online news and politics network.
“We have got to get Biden out of the race,” Uygur said. “Thank you for winning in 2020, but if he loses this time around, it’s not just his problem. It’s all of our problems. I actually think democracy is on the line. And so if it takes me running, then that’s what I’m going to do, and we’re all going to do it together.”
Uygur suggests Biden’s candidacy is an emergency response, noting recent polls indicating a tight race between him and Trump and alleged opposition to Biden from within the establishment.
“Yes, I am a ‘break glass in case of emergency candidate’ it should not have been me. It should have been someone else,” Uygur added. “But unfortunately, it was not anyone else.”
Uygur came to the United States in 1978 from Istanbul, Turkey, and is not a natural-born U.S. citizen, so there will be arguments about whether he’s qualified to run.
Nonetheless, he states that the “natural born citizen” clause in the U.S. Constitution would not disqualify him from running for president of the United States. The issue would likely reach the Supreme Court, and Uygur predicts it would be an easy win.
