Thursday Night Football play-by-play voice Al Michaels has been the subject of ongoing criticism for a perceived lack of enthusiasm during the Amazon Prime Video package. However, he has no plans of stepping aside anytime soon.
In a conversation with the New York Post’s Andrew Marchand, Michaels said that he still has one year remaining on his contract with Prime Video, and he intends to honor it.
“As far as I’m concerned, I’m doing next year,” Michaels said. “There’s no question about that in my mind.”
When prodded on whether or not he’s interested in a retirement tour, the legendary broadcast shut down any notion that he would want a farewell parade.
“Look when I’m done. It’s the way John Madden was done. Two words and a contraction: ‘It’s time.’ I don’t need any parade or that nonsense,” Michaels concluded.
Michaels has faced scrutiny for his less-than-enthusiastic calls this season, mimicking some of the same criticism he faced a year ago after denigrating the package’s schedule. However, this week’s matchup — featuring the 2-7 Chicago Bears taking on the 1-7 Carolina Panthers — is likely to bring up similar feelings for Michaels.
