A few days into 2024, several changes are coming to CNN. Athan Stephanopoulos is stepping down from his role as the network’s chief digital officer.
“In order to give [CNN head Mark Thompson] the freest hand possible to structure and shape the organization moving forward, I felt that now was the best time for me to step back from my role and move on to a new chapter,” Stephanopolous said in a memo to staffers.
In October 2022, Stephanopoulos became a key addition to CNN’s executive team, as former CNN head Chris Licht spearheaded a strategic infusion of top talent.
Stephanopoulos took charge of the global digital business, leading initiatives in editorial, product development, technology, business operations, and innovation strategies.
Dylan Byers from Puck reports that Alex MacCallum is poised to become CNN’s new chief digital officer, replacing Stephanopoulos. MacCallum, formerly the head of product and general manager of CNN’s direct-to-consumer business (now CNN+), had temporarily taken on the role of CNN Digital chief after Andrew Morse’s departure.
Although MacCallum has not officially accepted the position, Thompson is eager to have her join the team, viewing her as a crucial component of the new digital strategy.
