CNN was one of many networks to have New Year’s Eve programming. Nonetheless, the network saw their show, New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen from New York City’s Times Square, claim the top spot in all of cable, the network announced on Thursday.
The broadcast attracted 2.329 million viewers in the P2+ demographic and 802,000 viewers among adults aged 25-54. This marked a 12 percent increase in total viewership compared to the previous year. It secured the second-highest P2+ audience for the annual event since its inception in 2007, surpassed only by the viewership in 2020.
At the stroke of midnight (between 11:00 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.), CNN experienced a surge in viewership, attracting a total of 3.414 million viewers and 1.236 million among the P25-54 demographic. This achievement marked CNN as the top-ranking cable network during that time frame.
Notably, these figures represented a notable increase from the previous year, with a growth of +14 percent in total viewers and +3 percent among adults aged 25-54.
Among the P2+ audience, this performance was second only to the record set in 2020 for the most extensive viewership CNN has achieved since the inception of the New Year’s Eve ball drop event in 2007.
The program was also on digital platforms, which meant more eyes were on CNN during New Year’s Eve. When factoring in digital live streaming, the ball drop event (from 11:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.) garnered an average combined audience of 3.44 million viewers across both TV and digital platforms. Digital viewing contributed a 0.8% boost, equivalent to 29,000 viewers, to CNN’s P2+ average audience for New Year’s Eve.
