610 Sports Kansas City host Carrington Harrison believes the Peacock only streaming game is not a good thing, at all, for consumers.
In his afternoon drive show on Monday, Harrison pointed out those with access to the NBC affiliates in Kansas City and Miami will not have to deal with the streaming only aspect, but he also pointed out how less and less people have access to local stations.
“For some of you this is not an issue,” Harington said. “If you get KSHB 41 (the Kansas City local NBC station) this is not your issue. But, some of you don’t get KSHB, your only opportunity to watch this game, legally, is through paying for Peacock. This is is bad for you and I.”
Harrison went on to compare what is happening to trying to “put toothpaste back in the tube,” using the example of Thursday Night Football where it used to be available for “free,” and then it was put behind a paywall and now the NFL is doing the same thing with a playoff game.
“If you want to watch, if you want to see Taylor Swift, you’ll have to pay $5.99 to see this game,” he said. “This is bad for me and for you.”
Using the Chicago Bulls of the 1990’s as an example, Harrison discussed the accessibility of the team as a reason the fanbase grew. However, as we move forward, he sees this weekend as a sign of the times and predicts success for Peacock.
“They know this Peacock game is going to work,” Harrison said. “It’s a postseason game, it’s Patrick Mahomes, it’s Tyreek Hill going back to Arrowhead…TaylorSwift is going to be there.
“They know exactly what it is, this is the most obvious thing ever what they’re trying to do …this is bad for us, this is terrible for the conusmer, one of the worst things that can happen for the consumer.
“They started with a regular season package, they’re now moving to one postseason game. This is not where it stops, that’s never where it stops with the NFL. They’re only doing this with just Peacock (right now), what about when it happens to Paramount+? You don’t think CBS wants to get in on this? We don’t think ESPN will want to get in on this? I’m telling you, we argue about that slope, that slippery slope. This is bad for us, this is really really bad for us, the consumer, really bad.”
