Boomer & Gio Talk WFAN PD Search Then Learn Which Randy Moss They are Scheduled to Interview

Former WFAN Program Director Marc Chernoff called in to Boomer & Gio this morning to congratulte them on finishing first in the Barrett Sports Media Top 20 Major Market Sports Radio Morning Shows of 2023. Chernoff was responding to talk in the previous segment about who might be the next PD at WFAN, taking over for Spike Eskin when he heads back home to Philadelphia.

“While I was there you were also number one,” Chernoff said, “so continuing your success, I really am happy for you guys.”

Chernoff was asked if he had any thoughts, after hearing Eskin was headed back to Philadelphia, about returning to the station as Program Director. “No, you know how much I loved being at FAN,” he said. “But, the time is right for somebody new to come in and take charge.”

Gregg Giannotti then asked Chernoff, “Are you surprised Spike quit on us?” He replied, “I guess a little bit, but he always loved being on the air and he spent many years at WIP in Philly being on the air and being the PD there. He did a really good job as a PD. I know how much he loves being on the air.

“He kept his podcast and stuff like that, so when the possibility came I guess he leapt on it and said ‘now is the time, if I don’t do it now I might not ever have another chance.’ The right opening in his hometown, take up where his dad Howard left off for many years in afternoon drive in Philly…I think it’s a great thing for him.”

Chernoff said he is not aware of who the candidates are to replace Eskin but added, “There are some really good candidates within the company (Audacy)…who are running successful radio stations.”

After Chernoff hung up, a hilarious radio moment took place live on the air as the guys questioned producer Al Dukes about their next scheduled guest as they broadcast from Las Vegas, the site of Super Bowl LVIII this weekend.

“What is Randy Moss promoting?” asked Giannotti. “Something about horse racing,” Dukes replied. At this point, everyone in the room, with the exception of Dukes, realized this might not be the Randy Moss they were thinking they were going to talk to. Dukes went back and read the email from the person who booked Moss on the show and noticed it said the person worked for NBC Sports and NFL Network as a reporter.

As many horse racing fans are aware, this Randy Moss is very different from the Hall of Fame wide receiver who played most of his career for the Minnesota Vikings.

“You booked the white Randy Moss!” Gio said. “You booked the wrong one, you idiot!”

“No wonder they were so excited, too,” Al replied. “In all fairness, this person has got to say, ‘Just to be clear, this is not take-the-top-off-the-defense Randy Moss.’

“You can’t say ‘NFL Network,’ talk about the NFL, and be talking about horse racing Randy Moss.”

“I wonder how many people have this Randy Moss booked thinking they have No. 84,” Al said.
