Steve Kornacki has become synonymous with MSNBC and its election coverage. As he gears up for the 2024 edition later this year, he recently reflected on the 2020 coverage and recalled the lack of sleep he had.
Kornacki appeared this week on The Tonight Show, and host Jimmy Fallon asked whether it was true that he went over 40 hours without sleeping. MSNBC’s election coverage map correspondent confirmed that news and stated that it was exactly 45 hours straight that week covering the 2020 election.
“We went back and looked, and it was 45 straight at one point that week in 2020,” Kornacki told Fallon. “I mean, it was just like, it was all a blur. And then, at one point, I realized, ‘Wow, it’s been a while since I slept.’ Then I realized it was like, ‘I don’t want to fall asleep.’
“So we do these segments when we get new vote returns, and then they go back to the desk, and they wait for me to get new returns. And the key was don’t sit down because if you sit down, you fall asleep right away. I stayed standing, too, for a long time.”
Steve Kornacki noted during the interview with Fallon that he will be leaning on caffeine again as he provides viewers with the numbers on how the races are shaking out this year.
