Sports in San Diego during the Winter may be quiet but interest in sports talk radio remained high for Audacy-owned 97.3 The Fan. According to the latest Nielsen data, The Fan enjoyed top-three finishes across all of its dayparts during the quarter including another first-place finish in mornings.
Starting with weekday prime (M-F, 6a-7p), the station collected an 8.5 share, ranking second among Men 25-54. That was a four-tenths of a share decrease from the fall; however, the year-over-year gain equates to a four point boost.
In morning drive, Ben Higgins and Steven Woods delivered the strongest performance at the station for the quarter with a 12.1 share. Compared to the fall book, Ben & Woods were down 1.5 shares; however, the duo added an astounding 5.3 shares year-over-year. The morning show has now finished first three books in a row.
The midday duo of Annie Heilbrunn and Craig Elsten recently completed its first full quarter hosting together after the departure of John Kentera. Heilbrunn and Elsten pulled in a 6.9 share for the quarter, earning second place during the 10a-2p PST daypart. Compared to the last quarter, which was split between Annie & Elsten and Kentera, the station recorded a 7.3 share, second-place outcome. Year-over-year, middays have more than doubled its previous performance when it had a 3.1 share and was tied for 11th.
In afternoons, Tony Gwynn Jr. and Chris Ello generated a 6.4 share to secure a third-place finish for the quarter. In the fall book, Chris & Gwynn scored a 6.1 so they added three tenths of a point during the quarter. Year-over-year, the show gained 2.5 shares.
For the full week (M-SU, 6a-12a), 97.3 The Fan had a 7.1 share, placing it in a tie for third place with Men 25-54. Ratings information for San Diego Sports 760 and The Mightier 1090 was not available this quarter.
