JJ Redick is within his first few weeks on the job as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and mentioned at his introductory press conference that he would no longer be part of the content space in the new role. Redick, who was a basketball analyst for ESPN and the founder of ThreeFourTwo Productions, broadcast the NBA Finals alongside Mike Breen, Doris Burke and Lisa Salters, along with hosting both The Old Man and the Three and Mind the Game podcasts. On Monday afternoon, Redick released a message to listeners of The Old Man and the Three to thank them for their support over the years and explained the transitional state the company finds itself in at the moment.
“I will be moving on to coach the Los Angeles Lakers,” Redick said. “ThreeFourTwo is alive and well. ThreeFourTwo will continue to operate. I’m going to have no involvement. My entire focus right now is on coaching the Los Angeles Lakers and making them the best possible team they can be.”
Redick will have a roster consisting of superstar forwards LeBron James and Anthony Davis along with several young players and veterans looking to make an impact. Bronny James, the son of LeBron James, also signed a contract with the team after being selected in the NBA Draft and is currently playing in the NBA Summer League. Redick shared that whenever he reflects on the cool moments of his life, such as his basketball career through high school, college and in the NBA and media ventures thereafter, he always returns to remembering who he got to do it with. For those at ThreeFourTwo Productions, Redick offered his show of gratitude and expressed confidence in the direction of the company despite his absence.
“Everything we have done has been based upon a foundation of a love of the game of basketball, and going forward, everything that ThreeFourTwo will do without me will be based on that love of the game of basketball,” Redick said. “So we are going to continue to operate, we are going to continue to put out content.”
A comment left below the video on Redick’s YouTube channel, along with a tease from Redick himself, indicated that there would be a “massive interview this week with a guest host.” Redick is not involved in the interview but wanted the opportunity to give a sendoff to the people who subscribed, listened and watched the shows in which he was a part.
“This is a new chapter, a new challenge in my life,” Redick said. “I’m extremely excited about it, but I’m also very thankful for the last four years and everything we’ve been able to do, and you are in good hands going forward with Jason, Tommy, Richie and the rest of the team at ThreeFourTwo, so thank you for listening, and one final thank you from me personally. I appreciate you guys.”
