Former President Donald Trump was shot at a Pennsylvania campaign rally Saturday evening, moments after beginning remarks to a crowd assembled at the Butler Farm Show.
The would-be assassin fired off a number of rounds before being neutralized by the Secret Service.
Trump — the former President and current Republican nominee for the office — appeared to be struck in the ear before dropping at the podium and subsequently being covered by Secret Service agents. As he rose from their protection, he pumped his fist to the crowd and mouthed the word “fight” repeatedly. The campaign rally was being shown live on several television outlets and was also being streamed as the shots rang out.
In a post to social media, Donald Trump thanked the Secret Service and other law enforcement agents for “their rapid response to the shooting.”
A person attending the rally was killed by one of the shots fired by the attempted assassin who fired from roughly 150 yards away from the stage on the roof of a one-story building.
Many in the news media quickly took to social media to condemn the politically motivated violence. While some called for calm in response to the shooting, others were quick to point out that vitriol exists from both sides of the political aisle. Others pointed fingers at who should be held responsible for the situation.
