Mike Gallagher has spent decades in the news/talk radio industry. But the recent conversation between Elon Musk and Donald Trump on X reminded him why he fell in love with radio.
Musk hosted the Republican nominee for a conversation on X Spaces earlier this week, leading to a reported 73 million views for the discussion. During The Mike Gallagher Show, the Salem Radio Network host shared that listening to the two talk about policy topics took him back to an earlier time in his life.
“It was a throwback to the days of gathering around the radio and listening to something eventful. I was thinking a lot about why I fell in love with this industry,” said Gallagher. “When I was a kid, I would listen to Larry King on the Mutual Network overnight. I had to hide under the covers so my mom wouldn’t see that I was still awake. I’d listen to Larry King, and I dreamed of someday I’d get to do that for a living. I’d get to host a caller-driven talk show. And radio used to be like that.
“I’m sure plenty of people who listen and who watch us now on Salem News Channel remember the days when you would gather around the radio and you’d listen to a presidential speech or a big concert. Radio was and is this intimate medium that I fell in love with as a little kid in Ohio.”
Gallagher gave Elon Musk props for offering to host the same conversation with Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, in spite of her campaign mocking the discussion with Donald Trump.
