The Radio Hall of Fame has announced its 2024 Legends of Radio inductees, with Alan Colmes, Maria Martin, and Byron McGregor joining the esteemed class.
Alan Colmes hosted The Alan Colmes Show, distributed by Fox News Radio, and was also the co-host of Hannity & Colmes on Fox News Channel from 1996 to 2009. He was the most prominent liberal commentator for the network during his long tenure with the organization. In addition to his nationally syndicated show, Colmes also hosted morning drive a WABC and was the final voice heard on WNBC when the station signed off the air in 1988. Alan Colmes died in 2017.
Maria Martin was a longtime NPR editor overseeing the network’s coverage of Latin American affairs from the late 1970s through her departure in 1992. After her exit, she founded Latino USA, an English-language radio show based at the University of Texas. She later reported on Guatemala for NBC News and also contributed reports on Guatemalan issues for NPR until her death in 2023.
Byron McGregor served as a Canadian and American news anchor, working at legendary stations like CKLW in Windsor and WWJ Newsradio 950 in Detroit. He served as both a morning news anchor and afternoon news anchor during his 13-year tenure at WWJ. He also anchored the evening newscasts on a Detroit television station. He served as a news anchor from 1967 until his death in 1995.
“These Legends of Broadcasting may have passed on, but their legacy and what they meant to the radio industry will never die,” said Radio Hall of Fame Co-Chair Dennis Green. “The Radio Hall of Fame Nominating Committee is honored to award Hall of Fame Inductions to each of these individuals. May their contributions be a lasting tribute and inspiration for generations of broadcasters to emulate for years to come.”
“Our Nominating Committee recognizes the history of our medium and the countless individuals who contributed to the dominant influence of radio for so many decades,” added Co-Chair Kraig Kitchin. “Each of these individuals left an indelible mark on the audiences they connected with and the businesses that they were associated with. We’re grateful for their talents, and only regret that they were not able to receive this special recognition while alive.”
The Radio Hall of Fame will recognize its Legends of Radio inductees in a ceremony on Thursday, September 19th at the Omni Nashville.
