The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show features more than 500 affiliates nationwide. That doesn’t mean that Travis isn’t worried about someday being canceled or being able to control his media future.
While speaking about why he speaks so passionately about the coffee company that he and Buck Sexton founded, Clay Travis shared that he notices the lack of advertisers in his nationally syndicated radio show.
“Buck and I have been on the air for three years, and there has never been a car company ad on this show. Think about how crazy that is,” said Travis. “No car company has bought an ad on this radio program that Buck and I have voiced in over three years. No restaurant has bought an ad on this program in over three years, because the left in this country has been really good at going after advertisers and trying to curtail shows like this one by taking away the advertising brand.”
Clay Travis continued by noting that the situation is one of the reasons he sold his digital media company, OutKick, to FOX Corp. in 2021. He added that someday his hope is that only companies he owns are sponsoring his programs.
“In order to get bigger advertisers, you need to be a bigger company and to have more scale,” he shared. “My new strategy — and Buck is a part of this, and we have talked about this a great deal — is I want to own all of the companies that eventually advertise in my show. That way no one can ever say, ‘Oh, I’m going to show up and I’m going to censor Clay Travis. He’s not going to be able to say what he wants to say, because we’re going to take away all his advertisers.’
“This happened to Rush (Limbaugh). All of you who listened to Rush know that whenever he would say something, get over the target a little bit too much, they would come after his advertisers and try to destroy his ability to make a living, as well as everybody else that worked on the show … I want to own, eventually, every advertiser that advertises on any show that I do. Full disclosure. Because I want to protect my ability to always say what I think and make myself uncancellable.”
