University of Iowa student-run Adult Alternative KRUI-FM (89.7)/Iowa City has temporarily moved its studio to the third floor of the Iowa Memorial Union after the main studio was damaged by water.
The station’s Facebook Page reads, “Earlier this week, a flood at our station caused significant damage to our technology and infrastructure. As a result, all shows are on hold for now. We’re currently running on a backup system and expect shows to return in about two weeks — though this timeline is tentative. Moving forward, shows will be broadcast from a secondary studio while the main one undergoes repairs and renovations for the rest of the semester.
Speaking to the student newspaper, the Daily Iowan Staff, Advisor David Rooney said, “Hopefully, the recovery efforts were quick enough for minimal damage. We’re hoping for the best.
Adding, “I would say the average listener who just turns on for music might not hear much difference if they’re noticing that. But if it’s a regular listener, they’ll notice there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of voices on.”
In late August, a power outage at the building caused the HVAC condensation lines to overflow, leading to severe water damage that resulted in the loss of the main studio. The station is currently airing backup programming and has temporarily suspended all other shows while they assess the extent of the damage.
The station is on air with an automated backup. This year, it will celebrate its 40th anniversary.
KRUI allocates airtime among its student DJs, who collectively showcase a diverse music selection spanning alternative rock, hip-hop, funk, jazz, and dance.
