Dan Dakich is a big fan of Pat McAfee and really likes his addition to College GameDay on ESPN. What he doesn’t like are people who want to ridicule McAfee and talk about not liking him on social media, yet still tuning in to see what McAfee says or does each week on the show. In the case of this past week’s GameDay, it was McAfee having some fun with the name Gamecocks and the nickname ‘Cocks that had people commenting.
“The world lost their mind because the world doesn’t know that it is a play on the name Gamecocks,” Dakich said. So, McAfee, who has brought an incredible energy, like I do every day, to the set of College GameDay, decided he was going to do what the locals do. He was going to bring the double entendre.”
Dakich played the audio from the weekend for his OutKick audience on Don’t @ Me. Dakich read some of the social media posts complaining about McAfee including one that asked who his audience is.
“Who in the hell is the audience?” Dakich asked. “I’ll raise my hand. I’m the audience. I’m 62 years old, but I am hip as a hazel.” He added that what McAfee did was quality television. “I’ll say it until I die, that’s good TV.
“Why the angst toward McAfee? He’s bringing energy. He’s bringing fun. And oh, by the way, last I looked, it’s cable…Pat McAfee brings it every day.”
Dakich said he thought McAfee was “much needed” on GameDay and that he previously believed that the addition of McAfee and a coach would take the show to another level. While McAfee started last year, this year Nick Saban is a new member of the team. Dakich did also in addition to energy and fun, McAfee also brings a lot of knowledge.
“A lot of people are commenting on McAfee’s humor, his energy, his drive, all that stuff,” he said. “…If you listen to Pat McAfee, he tells you more than anybody except Saban…
“My point being, if you don’t like McAfee, turn the channel. You have a lot of options. Turn the channel before it starts. Don’t watch. Turn the channel when McAfee comes on.”
