After announcing plans to put its podcast archives behind a paywall, The New York Times has set its pricing plans for the subscription service.
While new episodes will remain free to listeners, The Times will make past shows of The Daily, The Ezra Klein Show, Hard Fork, Modern Love, and more available with subscriptions to the NYT Audio app.
NYT Audio app subscriptions will cost $6 per month or users can purchase a yearlong subscription for $50. Since launching the app, it has been downloaded more than one million times.
“We expect the subscription model to evolve over time, allowing us to maintain and grow our audience while simultaneously introducing listeners to the benefit of a subscription,” The Times said in the statement.
With the new strategy, The New York Times will make the three most recent episodes of each podcast available for free, while putting every other episode behind the paywall. The changes to its policy are expected to be enacted in October.
The New York Times plans to continue selling advertisements in its podcasts in spite of the subscription service. In 2023, podcast advertising slowed to $1.9 billion, an uptick of 5% after several consecutive years of double-digit growth according to reports from the IAB.
