Suzyn Waldman: Working With John Sterling in New York Yankees Radio Booth Again Took 2 Seconds to Feel Normal

"You could tell he had missed it, and I thought it was great.”

Legendary New York Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling returned to the booth this week after abruptly stepping away earlier this year. His longtime cohort Suzyn Waldman welcomed the return.

While appearing with the WFAN duo of Brandon Tierney and Sal Licata, Waldman was asked about what the acclimation process was like to work alongside Sterling again. She said it was just like riding a bike.

“We really did have fun – you kind of forget and it took about two seconds,” said Waldman. “What did they say about Billy (Martin)? He was tanned and rested every time George (Steinbrenner) brought him back? You could tell he had missed it, and I thought it was great.”

Waldman added that she was so locked into the season and her broadcasting role that she never truly contemplated what Sterling’s abrupt retirement meant to fans, the broadcast, the radio network, and to her career.

“I’ve seen it this year, but I never really thought about it a lot because when it involves you, you don’t really think about it like that,” she said. “But I remember when, growing up and listening to certain pairs of people that were on for 30 years, it means summer, it means when you first fell in love with Yankees baseball. It’s all of that, very personal, and we’re totally John & Suzyn, wherever we go.”
