Detroit Radio personality Lee Alan, widely recognized as “Lee Alan On The Horn,” passed away on October 29 at the age of 90. A lifelong Detroiter, Alan launched his broadcasting career at WJLB and WJBK before transitioning to WKHM and WXYZ.
Alan was among the first in America to secure an interview with the Beatles. In addition, Lee collaborated with Berry Gordy to produce a promotional charity song titled “Set Me Free,” which featured Martha and the Vandellas, along with Marvin Gaye providing backup vocals.
He served as co-host of “CLUB 1270” on WXYZ-TV alongside Joel Sebastian, guiding the dance show to achieve top ratings and solidifying his status as a prominent figure in Detroit media.
Lee played a pivotal role in revitalizing the renowned Walled Lake Casino, where he hosted legendary live broadcasts featuring prominent artists, including Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, Stevie Wonder, and various Motown icons.
During his radio show, Lee notably showcased Chuck Berry’s music while Berry was serving time in prison, which not only reignited the singer’s popularity but also contributed to his eventual parole.
