Last week, World Golf Hall of Famer Lanny Wadkins announced his 13th season as lead analyst for the PGA Tour Champions would be his last full season. Now, a surprising name has been announced as his replacement as Paul Azinger will be taking his place on what is currently said to be a one-year contract.
Adam Schupak of Golfweek was first to report the story and Azinger told him about the new gig, “It’s not like a full-time gig or anything, which I don’t want, but to be able to go in there and part-time some golf, some really great golf, it’ll be kind of fun. I’ll just be as candid as I can and enjoy it.” Schupak also reported Peter Jacobsen and John Cook will split time as analyst on weeks Azinger is off as his deal is only for 10-12 events. Cook works on the broadcast as a reporter when he is not in the booth.
Azinger, 64, was a 12-time PGA Tour winner who also won a major at the 1993 PGA Championship. ‘Zinger was the lead golf analyst for NBC Sports for five years, but the network chose not to renew his contract. No replacement was ever hired, instead NBC used several different broadcasters this past season.
Azinger has also called golf for ABC and ESPN as well as FOX Sports. The 2023 Ryder Cup from Rome turned out to be final assignment for Azinger at NBC.
