The company founded by Alex Jones — Infowars — was auctioned off by the federal government Wednesday. And satirical website The Onion was the winning bidder.
Jones revealed that The Onion had placed the winning bid during a live broadcast on the X platform. He also shared that the company was shutting his program down and ending the brand.
“I just got word 15 minutes ago that my lawyers and folks met with the U.S. trustee over our bankruptcy this morning and they said they are shutting us down even without a court order this morning,” Jones said. “The Connecticut democrats with The Onion newspaper bought us.”
According to reports, The Onion plans to take the outlet founded by Jones in its usual comedy direction and use the brand as another arm of its satirical empire.
“Make no mistake: This is a coup for our company and a well-deserved victory for multinational elites the world over,” a satirical post from the company said after the auction victory was announced.
Financial details on the winning bid were not immediately made available. Some reports suggested that bids were as high as seven figures. Jones was forced to relinquish the company he founded more than three decades ago after declaring bankruptcy linked to a Connecticut judgment that he owed more than $1 billion in damages to families of children slain in the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre.
Alex Jones had continually shared hope that “one of the good guys” would purchase his company and allow him to continue to host his show and keep the Infowars brand afloat.
