Gregg Giannotti: Karma is Coming Back to Get Doug Gottlieb a Little Bit

"He knew this probably wouldn’t last."

Throughout the week, Green Bay Phoenix men’s basketball head coach and FOX Sports Radio host Doug Gottlieb has been in the news cycle surrounding comments made on social media and in a press conference. Gottlieb exchanged words with ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter on X regarding a report that Sacramento State had $50 million in NIL money. The next day on his radio show, he admitted his tone was “pretty negative” while adding that he felt the response from Schefter pointing out that his basketball team was in last place and had lost seven straight games felt personal.

Gottlieb was absent from the Wednesday edition of his radio program, which happened to coincide with his team’s matchup against the Michigan Tech Huskies. Green Bay lost the matchup by two points, and video circulated of Gottlieb purportedly referring to the opponent as “Nobody U” in a press conference that occurred before tip-off. The situation surrounding Gottlieb has drawn intrigue from those in collegiate sports and the media business, including WFAN host Gregg Giannotti, who addressed the situation on the Thursday edition of Boomer & Gio.

“I said this the other day and I don’t dislike the guy, but I’m really enjoying this Doug Gottlieb thing because now everybody is just crapping all over him, and it’s almost like karma has come back to get him in a little bit,” Giannotti said. “The way he’s been a talk show host, he’s rubbed people the wrong way and said certain things and been snarky, and now he decides to take this college basketball job while he’s still a talk show host and he’s failing at a miserable level, so much so that it’s become national news.”

Giannotti concluded his discourse by articulating that it was fun to watch what was taking place, leading co-host Boomer Esiason to convey that it probably would not have become national news had he not gone up against Schefter. Furthermore, he mentioned that more people are paying attention now and that it is something he is going to have to deal with. Giannotti added that if he was his friend, he would advise him to give up either the head coaching job or his radio program, affirming that he looks weathered as if he had not slept in the last week.

“At this point, I don’t think he makes it past this year the way that things are going, but that’s why he kept his talk show job,” Giannotti said. “He knew this probably wouldn’t last.”

“They probably couldn’t pay him as much as he would have liked,” Esiason replied. “That’s the other thing.”
