NPR has announced the addition of former CBS Evening News Executive Producer Jay Shaylor to its organization as the new executive in charge of Morning Edition and Up First.
“Jay is a strong editorial leader and a gifted audience-first producer,” NPR Vice President for News Programming Eric Marrapodi wrote in an email to news employees. “He joins NPR after an award-winning career leading some of the nation’s premier broadcasts.”
In addition to his time working with Norah O’Donnell on the CBS Evening News, Jay Shaylor also previously served in a similar role with CNN’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. Additionally, he spent time working with network morning programs like Good Morning America at ABC.
In his new role, Jay Shalor will oversee the network’s morning show — Morning Edition — alongside its companion podcast Up First. The podcast is continually ranked as one of the most listened-to programs in the entire podcast format, and routinely finishes in the top five alongside another NPR podcast, NPR News Now.

For more than 45 years, the Morning Edition team has helped set the agenda for the day—informing, engaging and delighting listeners fairly and accurately,” Shaylor said. “I’m excited to be joining this iconic broadcast and its companion podcast, Up First, at this critical moment, helping the team to report the news that matters to our listeners without fear or favor.”
Shaylor will begin his duties at NPR on Monday, March 3rd.
