FCC Issues Advisory Regarding Airplay And Free Performances

Blackburn has alleged a “forced quid pro quo” for the shows often used for charity shows or radio station events.

In response to Sen. Marsha Blackburn’s (R-TN) accusations of payola (BMM 2/4), FCC Chairman Brendon Carr has issued an advisory to radio stations concerning increased artist airplay in exchange for free performances.

Blackburn has alleged a “forced quid pro quo” for the shows often used for charity shows or radio station events.

The advisory reminds licensees that free or reduced-cost shows cannot be offered in exchange for increased airplay. It further warns that stations hosting those types of events are responsible for ensuring that payola regulations are not violated.
