ESPN host Stephen A. Smith has been floated as a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2028. He told 77 WABC host Sid Rosenberg there’s no chance that happens.
During an appearance on the 77 WABC morning show, Smith was asked about his prospects for joining what could potentially be a crowded field of Democratic hopefuls vying for the nation’s top office.
“It’d be crazy if I did it,” said Smith. “I’ve got a good life. Why the hell would I tarnish my life by getting into politics? I mean, first of all, it certainly can’t pay me the same. Secondly, I would need to curry favor with congressmen, senators, donors, everything like that. I’d be begging, most of the time, for support.
“Why do I need that when I can remain a pundit? I love what I do,” he continued. “I love talking politics as well as talking sports and what have you, please don’t get me wrong. But I gotta admit, it is flattering. It’s really, really funny. I don’t think for one second think I’m qualified or anything like that.”
Stephen A. Smith added that just because he isn’t going to enter the political arena doesn’t mean he believes he wouldn’t be good at it.
“If I really, really engaged and really stuck my nose in it and went after it — I’ll tell you this much — what I will say to you is that any of the people that they had in the polls for the Democratic Party at this moment in time, I believe I would beat them all.”
Sid Rosenberg agreed with that encapsulation, saying “I am with you 1000%.”
Some polls have shown Smith as garnering more than 2% of support from prospective 2028 voters.
