700 WLW morning host Mike McConnell has announced his plans to retire from the iHeartMedia Cincinnati news/talk station.
On Wednesday morning, McConnell informed listeners that next Friday, April 4th, will be his final day with the heritage station. He joked that he made his decision “because I’m old.”
“Three years ago, when I signed my present contract, I pretty much made up my mind it was going to be the last one and told management over a year ago,” said McConnell. “I’ll miss a lot of aspects of it, but look forward to it at the same time.
“I’ll have no regrets, because I’ve done this for a long time. I did the math and realized I started doing this for a living in April of ’75, so that’s fifty years. And that’s enough,” said McConnell. “I’ve enjoyed it, great job, most of my life and I’ll miss it. We’ll have plenty of time to talk about it between now and then. Last Friday will be my last day on the radio.”
Mike McConnell rejoined 700 WLW in 2015 to replace longtime morning host Jim Scott. He departed the station in 2010 to join WGN Radio in Chicago, where he hosted middays. In his first stint at WLW, McConnell spent 25 years hosting middays, including a stint in national syndication with Premiere Networks.
The station has not announced who will step into the morning host role.
