Former ESPN New York Tonight host Gordon Damer has launched his own podcast following his dismissal from ESPN New York in August of last year. He made the announcement on his X account, revealing the new podcast venture entitled Gordon Damer On Sports.
Damer, along with his on-air co-host Larry Hardesty, were both cut from the radio brand as the station transitioned from their 98.7 FM frequency to the 880 AM frequency last year. As a result, both were left seeking new opportunities.
“Excited (and a little nervous) to share that I’m launching a new sports podcast,” Damer wrote on X. “It’s something that I’ve wanted to do for a while. Hope you’ll give it a listen.”
A veteran of the New York City sports radio scene, Damer began his career in 1996 and was an original member of the ESPN New York team when the station launched in 2001. In addition to his ESPN New York tenure, he also served as a sports anchor on 880 WCBS, where he hosted the New York Yankees’ pre- and postgame shows. Furthermore, Damer has hosted programs for the YES Network and MLB.com.
Moreover, Damer explained on his personal Substack why he chose to begin a podcast months after his departure from ESPN New York.
“Let’s be real—sports talk today is loud, lazy, and completely overrun by clickbait and shouting heads,” wrote Damer. “I’ve launched this podcast and newsletter to bring it back to what it should be: smart, funny, honest conversations for people who still actually enjoy sports.”
Damer hosted evenings at ESPN New York from April of 2017 until his dismissal in 2024. Throughout that span, he built a loyal following with his candid takes and sharp analysis.
Now, with a fresh start, Damer has turned his focus to a more independent platform. The New York-focused podcast kicked off its first episode with Damer expressing his excitement for the new venture.
“It’s all going on in sports right now,” Damer said. “The NFL Draft. The NBA playoffs. You got the Yankees and Mets and a whole lot more. What a perfect time to start a sports podcast.”
