The BSM Top 5 Original Sports Podcasts of 2018

0

For the first time since we began doing the BSM Top 20 in 2015, we’ve created a category to recognize the top original sports podcasts. It’s way overdue and gives you a chance to see which programs strike a chord with industry leaders.

Before you scroll down to see who cracked the Top 5, let me remind you that the voting for this category is done by fifty one radio executives from thirty cities and thirteen companies. BSM president Jason Barrett does not vote. He simply assembles the panel and presents their collective opinions.

Because podcasts are measured, sold, promoted, and received differently than sports radio programs, we gave our voters freedom to pick their Top 5 based on their personal preferences. Each voter has different tastes, so this very much a subjective process. That said, the goal of this project is to offer a collective snapshot of what industry executives value most.

Moving on to the rankings, the inaugural recipient of the top prize in this category is Pardon My Take from Barstool Sports. It’s been well known that the show has been a hit with fans, but radio executives have a high opinion of the podcast as well.

BSM congratulates Big Cat and PFT on being recognized for their tremendous show, and we now present the full results of The BSM Top 5 Original Sports Podcasts of 2018.

Additional Notes:

  1. Pardon My Take finished twelve (12) points ahead of the Bill Simmons Podcast to earn the top spot. PMT also secured the most 1st place votes with thirteen (13).
  2. Marty Smith’s America The Podcast finished 6th, three (3) points behind the Pat McAfee Show.
  3. A total of eighty nine (89) podcasts were eligible for voting. Thirty three (33) of them did not register a single vote.
  4. Eighteen (18) of the eighty nine podcasts up for consideration received at least one (1) 1st place vote.

The BSM Top 20 Major Market Program Directors of 2018

0

It’s been a fun four days highlighting the sports format’s top shows and personalities, but we always wrap up week 1 by showcasing sports radio’s top program directors. These are the folks responsible for guiding some of the best stations in America, and working with the elite talent on each brand’s airwaves to maximize their success.

Before you scroll down, there are a few things to be aware of. First, the voting for this series is done by fifty one radio executives from thirty cities and thirteen companies. BSM president Jason Barrett does not vote. He simply assembles the panel and presents their collective opinions.

Secondly, we ask our voters to consider the following criteria below when judging programs. That said, each voter has different preferences, which makes this a subjective process.

  • Strong station ratings in 2018
  • Great reputation and consistency
  • Exceptional track record of managing elite talent
  • Finished 2018 programming a sports radio station
  • Points are given for each spot (EX: 20 for 1st, 1 for 20th)

Our one golden rule is that an individual must finish the year programming in the sports format. If an individual changes companies or markets that doesn’t affect their status. Just as long as they’re active still leading a sports radio brand, they’re up for consideration.

Moving on to the rankings, the format’s top major market programmer for 2018 according to our executive panel was Mike Thomas of 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston. This is Thomas’ 2nd win. He last won the honor in 2016. He and Mark Chernoff have traded places at the top each of the past 4 years.

We congratulate Mike on his well deserved recognition, as well as every other programmer who gained a spot on this year’s list. With that in mind, here are the full results of “BSM’s Top 20 Major Market Program Directors of 2018”!

Additional Notes:

  • Mike Thomas recorded eighteen (18) first place votes, the most of any PD, en route to a 56 point victory.
  • The closest races saw Spike Eskin nip Jeff Catlin by 2 points for 4th place. Armen Williams did the same to Jimmy Powers to claim 13th. Brian Long was 3 points ahead of Terry Foxx to secure the 18th spot.
  • Dan Zampillo was in 21st place, 8 points behind Mike Salk
  • 22-25 belonged to Rich Moore, Eric Johnson, John Mamola and Len Weiner
  • 33 program directors were eligible for consideration, 9 received at least one (1) 1st place vote

The BSM Top 20 Mid Market Program Directors of 2018

That alone is why Jay Taylor and John Hanson are not part of this year’s results. Had they remained active in the format thru the end of 2018, they’d be on this list.

Moving on to the rankings, the format’s top mid-market programmer for 2018 according to our executive panel was Ryan Haney of WJOX. Haney unseats 2x winner Andy Roth of 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland. Under Ryan’s watch, WJOX made some big changes in 2018, and based on the early returns, the moves have been strongly received. WJOX has been a force in the market for a long time, and with Haney continuing to shape the sound and vision of the brand, they appear to be in great shape for years to come.

We congratulate Ryan on his well deserved recognition, as well as every other programmer who gained a spot on this year’s list. With that in mind, here are the full results of “BSM’s Top 20 Mid Market Program Directors of 2018”!

Additional Notes:

  • Ryan Haney knocked off 2x winner Andy Roth by finishing ahead by 13 points. Haney had the most 1st place finishes with seven (7)
  • The tightest battles were for spots 6-7 and 13-14. Brad Willis was 4 points ahead of Chad Boeger, and Jeff Austin finished 5 points in front of Dennis Glasgow.
  • Jimmy Clark finished in 21st place, 7 points behind Ryan Porth
  • 22-25 went to Jason Anderson, Lloyd Cole, Jeff Caves, and Joe Hunk
  • 9 of the 46 Program Directors eligible for consideration received a 1st place vote

The BSM Top 20 National Sports Radio Shows of 2018

0

On the 4th day of list-a-mania, we turn our attention to sports radio’s national shows. These programs air on some of the most recognized brands in the nation and feature some of the best talent in the format.

That said, each voter has different tastes, which makes this a subjective process. No list will ever satisfy every station, show or city, but what makes the BSM Top 20 series unique is that collective snapshot of the sports format’s best shows is decided on by industry executives.

  • Strong ratings in 2018
  • Important show/brand connection with local listeners
  • Exceptional talent and content provided on a consistent basis
  • Finished 2018 with the station and in the afternoon timeslot
  • Points are given for each spot (EX: 20 for 1st, 1 for 20th)

Moving on to the rankings, at the top of the mountain once again is FOX Sports Radio’s Colin Cowherd. This is Colin’s third time being voted the best national host in America. He gave up that honor last year to The Dan Patrick Show but voters this year came out strongly in support of his work.

Colin’s ability to consistently deliver thought provoking opinions, interesting analogies, bold predictions, funny moments, and insightful conversations with well known sports figures, keep him top of mind with everyone, and one of the national scene’s most important personalities.

Additional Notes:

  • Colin Cowherd reclaimed 1st place with a 31 point advantage over The Dan Patrick Show; Cowherd also gained the most 1st place votes (18)
  • The closest races were Nick Wright over Mike Florio by 4 points, and Barstool Radio edging The Morning Men by 2 points
  • Spain & Fitz finished in 21st place, 22 points behind Scott Ferrall
  • 22-25 belonged to Freddie & Fitz, Ben Maller, Jason Smith and Taz & Moose
  • 51 national shows were eligible for consideration, 6 received at least one (1) 1st place vote

A BSM Top 10 To Make You More Money

0

It’s been a week of lists here at SportsRadioPD.com, with the 4th annual BSM Top 20 series being unveiled for 2018.  It’s great to see the recognition the format gets during this week and I’m sure the lists spark many conversations across the country.  I have absolutely nothing to do with the results, but I did thoroughly enjoy seeing so many names I’ve worked with through the years show up on the various lists.  Congratulations to all the people who were named on any of the lists and a big tip of the cap to Jason and the BSM staff for really putting a spotlight on all the great talent in our format.

In keeping with the theme this week, I present to you my Top 10 list of things you need to know about each of your clients or prospects:

10. Do they hold any major or annual sales or events?

In the “old days,” pre-internet, I remember reps getting sent to the library to look at old newspapers.  They’d look through all the ads from the previous year and mark down the dates of big sales or anniversaries.  Knowing your client’s annual calendar can help you get ahead in preparation and allows you to keep them in mind if opportunities pop up in their important windows.

9. What community efforts, charities or causes does their company support?

I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve used this information in a presentation over the years.  Being involved in community efforts, charitable events and causes is not only a great way for local businesses to support their communities and brand, but if the client is using it in their advertising, it’s good for the station as well.

8. What misconceptions do they hear about their business or industry?

In a true marketing partnership, we bring the expertise in marketing and advertising and the client is bringing the knowledge on their business.  If they can help you identify misconceptions, you can use that information for copy ideas or even to help identify who to target with a certain message.

7. Who is their biggest competitor and why would people shop there?

Eight or nine times out of ten, the answer to this question will write your copy for you!  Small business owners love to talk about why they’re better than their competitors, and that’s exactly what this question will turn in to.

6. Which of their products or services are considered their specialty or are things they like to feature because a higher profit margin?

Now you’re trying to make sure you understand what they want to sell and what it costs.  This will not only help with copy or focus of a campaign, but it can also start to help you formulate a budget based on the main products they want to move.

5. Do they have any access to co-op from manufacturers?

Back in 2015, Borrell Associates did a study and found that almost 40% of co-op goes unused.  Sit down before you read this, but that’s around $14 BILLION dollars.  The Radio Advertising Bureau website has a ton of co-op information to help get you started, but this question should always be asked.

4. How will they measure the success of an advertising campaign?

This is all about making sure you’re on the same page with the client.  How success will be measured should be very clear from the beginning, so everyone knows the target that is being chased.  Both sides need to make sure the goals are reasonable, and you need to make sure the proper budget is being spent to match the expectations.

3. Who is their target market?

When it comes to who your clients are targeting, never assume you know.  Whether it’s age, gender, income, education or simply location, drill down as far as you can to the specifics of who they wish to reach.  Our first job in being the client’s marketing consultant is matching our products up with the audience they are trying to be in front of with their message.

2. What is their digital marketing strategy?

I know each-and-every one of you reading this is hearing this message from all directions.  This is where the money is, and they’re going to spend it with someone.  Might as well be with you, right?

1. What is their monthly budget?

You have to ask.  And when the first response comes that doesn’t in any way, shape or form answer your question, you need to keep asking until you get an answer.  I’m a big believer in the strategy of throwing numbers out in wide ranges to elicit some sort of response.  Whatever your strategy is, do whatever you can to get guidance that will allow you to know, up front, how serious they are about investing in their business.

The BSM Top 20 Mid Market Afternoon Shows of 2018

0

We’ve reached the 3rd day of highlighting the best in the sports radio business. Today’s focus is on the top Mid Market Afternoon Shows of 2018, where two top shows on Marconi nominated stations battled for bragging rights supremacy.

Before you scroll down, there are a few things to be aware of. First, the voting for our Top 20 series is done by fifty one radio executives from thirty cities and thirteen companies. BSM president Jason Barrett does not vote. He simply assembles the panel and presents their collective opinions.

Secondly, we ask our voters to consider the following criteria below when judging programs.

Moving on to the rankings, we have a new king in afternoons. This year’s top honor goes to Gary Parrish of 92.9 ESPN in Memphis. Parrish takes the crown from last year’s winner The Bull and Fox of 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland.

Parrish held off The Fast Lane in St. Louis to secure the top spot. The Fast Lane actually gained more 1st place votes, but Parrish was more consistent on voter scorecards, earning a 12 point win.

Between his likability, strong ratings, high energy style, national profile, and the improved brand recognition of 92.9 ESPN, Gary’s program caught the attention of industry voters, giving Memphis their 1st victory in a Mid-Market category.

We congratulate Gary and his crew on being recognized by industry executives as the best mid market afternoon show of 2018, and tip our cap to every show which gained a spot on this year’s list. With that in mind, here are the full results of “BSM’s Top 20 Mid Market Afternoon Shows of 2018”!

Additional Notes:

  • Gary Parrish finished 12 points ahead of The Fast Lane to earn the top spot; The Fast Lane though did receive the most 1st place votes (6)
  • Poni & Mueller nipped 3HL by 1 point, the same was true for The Big Show over Scott & Jeremy
  • Isaac & Suke finished 21st, 6 points behind Cofield & Company
  • Spots 22-25 were occupied by Rip City Drive, After Further Review, Unsportsmanlike Conduct and Game Time with Heath Cline
  • 16 of the 49 afternoon shows eligible for consideration received a 1st place vote

The BSM Top 20 Major Market Afternoon Shows of 2018

We’ve reached the 3rd day of highlighting the best in the sports radio business. Today’s focus is on the top Major Market Afternoon Shows of 2018, and the results are likely going to generate mixed reactions.

Before you scroll down, there are a few things to be aware of. First, the voting for these awards is done by fifty one radio executives from thirty cities and thirteen companies. BSM president Jason Barrett does not vote. He simply assembles the panel and presents their collective opinions.

Secondly, we ask our voters to consider the following criteria below when judging programs.

Moving on to the rankings, we have a change at the top. After winning this category the past three years, Mike Francesa of WFAN in New York no longer occupies the top spot. The new leader is The Michael Kay Show of 98.7 ESPN NY.

TMKS struck a chord this year with industry execs for their consistency in afternoons, improved performance, exposure thru TV on the YES Network, and strong talent, content, and chemistry. There may have also been some voter fatigue towards Francesa who had won the past three years and left terrestrial radio last December, but returned in April.

We congratulate Michael, Don, and Peter on being chosen as the best major market afternoon show of 2018, and every other show which gained a spot on this year’s list. With that in mind, here are the full results of “BSM’s Top 20 Major Market Afternoon Shows of 2018”!

MajPM
BSM Major Market Afternoon #7
BSM Major #13
BSM18-MajPM-20

Additional Notes:

  • The Michael Kay Show tied with runner up Mike Valenti for the most 1st place votes (8); TMKS earned the most 2nd-5th place votes of any show en route to a 7 point win.
  • The tightest races were between 6-8. Mike Francesa beat The Hardline by 2 points. Dallas’ PM drive show slipped by Mike Missanelli by 3 points. Petros & Money also claimed 11th place by 5 points over McNeil & Parkins.
  • Jon Marks & Ike Reese finished 21st, 7 points behind Steve Czaban. 22-25 went to Sean Salisbury, Chuck & Chernoff, Jorge Sedano and Danny, Dave & Moore.
  • 13 of the 36 afternoon shows eligible for consideration received a 1st place vote

The BSM Top 20 Mid Market Midday Shows of 2018

0

Our 2nd day of recognizing the best in the sports radio format during Super Bowl week continues with a look at the nation’s top midday shows. For those who have asked what separates Major Markets and Mid Markets, the majors focus on markets ranked 1-20, and the mid markets focus on 21-100.

Before you scroll down to see who made the list, there are a few things to be aware of. First, the voting for these awards is done by a large panel of radio executives. We involved fifty one executives from thirty cities and thirteen companies this year in our voting process. BSM president Jason Barrett does not vote.

Secondly, it should be understood that if a show completed 2018 but has since ended or undergone changes in 2019, that doesn’t prohibit them from making the list. Case in point, Michael Grady signed off at 107.5/1070 The Fan in Indianapolis last week, and Chris Duncan officially left 101 ESPN in St. Louis a few weeks earlier.

Third, in order to create these results, we ask our voters to consider the following criteria when judging the format’s best shows. That said, each voter values certain things more than others, so we try to gather everyone’s feedback, add it all up, and present a collective snapshot of what industry executives think.

  • Strong ratings in 2018
  • Important show/brand connection with local listeners
  • Exceptional talent and content provided on a consistent basis
  • Finished 2018 with the station and in the morning drive timeslot
  • Points are given for each spot (EX: 20 for 1st, 1 for 20th)

Moving on to the rankings, the panel this year came out in strong fashion for Dan Dakich of 107.5/1070 The Fan in Indianapolis. Dakich won this award in 2016 too, before being passed last year by Midday 180 in Nashville.

The ability to stir the sports conversation in Indianapolis with strong opinions, big guests, and unwavering passion is what sets Dakich apart. His program has been a staple of The Fan’s lineup, and a key part of the station’s overall success. Our executive panel took note of Dan’s production, giving him the most 1st place votes in the category and a comfortable 22 point win.

We congratulate Dan and his crew on earning top billing as the best in the midday category, as well as every other show which gained a spot on this year’s list. With that in mind, here are the full results of “BSM’s Top 20 Mid Market Midday Shows of 2018”!

Additional Notes:

  • Dan Dakich received the most 1st place votes (12) and earned 22 points more than runner up Midday 180 in this year’s voting
  • The tightest races included Nick Bahe besting Grady & Big Joe by 2 points, and Rothman & Carpenter edging 3-Man Front by 1 point
  • David Glenn finished 21st, 6 points behind Wilson & Parcell
  • Spots 22-25 went to Show/Vern, Erik Ainge, Geoff Calkins, and Bob Valvano
  • 11 of the 45 midday shows eligible for consideration received a 1st place vote

Here is the remaining schedule for the BSM Top 20 of 2018.

  • Finished 2018 with the station and in the midday timeslot

Moving on to the rankings, the panel made it clear, Mason and Ireland of ESPN LA 710 are their choice for the top midday program of 2018. The Los Angeles duo also won this award in 2016 before being passed last year by Joe and Evan of WFAN in New York.

The chemistry, consistency, and entertainment value provided by Mason and Ireland went a long way in earning the support of industry executives. Their program has been a fixture in Los Angeles for nearly two decades, and that continued excellence is a big reason why our executive panel gave them the most 1st place votes and a 33 point win in the midday category.

We congratulate Steve, John and their crew on earning top billing as the best in the midday category, as well as every other show which gained a spot on this year’s list. With that in mind, here are the full results of “BSM’s Top 20 Major Market Midday Shows of 2018”!

  • Carmen & Jurko finished 21st, 4 points behind Stokley & Zach and Humpty & Canty with Rothenberg
  • 22-25 was Gargano & Myrtetus, Bob, Groz & Tom, Bickley & Marotta and Steinmetz & The Guru

The BSM Top 20 Mid Market Morning Shows of 2018

0

It’s become an annual tradition for BSM to recognize the best in the sports radio format during Super Bowl week. This is our 4th year of publishing the BSM Top 20 series, and as we’ve done each of the past three years, we kick things off by shining the spotlight on the Top 20 Mid Market morning shows of 2018.

Before you scroll to look at the results, there are a few things to be aware of. First, the voting for these awards is done by a large panel of radio executives. We involved fifty one people from thirty cities and thirteen companies this year in our Major and Mid Market voting process. BSM president Jason Barrett does not vote in this process.

Secondly, to create these results, we ask voters to consider the following criteria when judging the format’s best programs. Be advised, each voter values certain things more than others, so we try to gather everyone’s feedback, add it all up, and present a collective snapshot of what industry executives think.

  • Strong ratings in 2018
  • Important show/brand connection with local listeners
  • Exceptional talent and content provided on a consistent basis
  • Finished 2018 with the station and in the morning drive timeslot
  • Points are given for each spot (EX: 20 for 1st, 1 for 20th)

Moving on to the rankings, the panel this year once again placed its full support behind 101 ESPN’s Bernie Miklasz. This was the 3rd straight win for Miklasz. The St. Louis morning host has claimed the top prize every year since the Mid Market category for morning shows was introduced.

Miklasz once again produced strong ratings in morning drive for 101 ESPN. His ability to deliver strong informed opinions, break news, mix it up with Michelle Smallmon, and serve as St. Louis’ most influential sports voice earned the respect of our executive panel, adding another industry honor for Hubbard St. Louis’ morning man.

We congratulate Bernie and Michelle on being recognized as the best in their category, as well as every other program which earned a spot on this year’s list. With that in mind, here are the full results of “BSM’s Top 20 Mid Market Morning Shows of 2018”!

Additional Notes:
