Local Radio and TV Account for Nearly 2.5 Million Jobs and $1.2 Trillion in U.S. Economy, NAB Study Shows

0

The National Association of Broadcasters has spent years making its case on Capitol Hill — from defending AM radio’s place in vehicles to pushing back against a proposed performance royalty. Now, the organization is adding economic data to its policy arguments with a new study measuring the financial impact of local radio and television.

The report, conducted by Woods & Poole Economics, Inc. with support from BIA Advisory Services, finds that local broadcasting generates $1.19 trillion in U.S. Gross Domestic Product and supports 2.46 million jobs nationwide. According to NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt, the findings underscore broadcasting’s unique value.

“No other industry gives more to Americans for free,” LeGeyt says. “This report reinforces that broadcasters are not only essential to our democracy and daily lives, but to the strength of our economy, as well.”

Local commercial radio accounts for a sizable share of that impact. The study estimates radio contributes $437 billion in annual economic output and supports more than 909,000 jobs across the country. Those jobs include both direct employment inside radio stations and indirect positions created through radio’s broader economic ripple effect — reaching industries such as construction, manufacturing, retail, and transportation.

Breaking down the numbers further, Woods & Poole attributes $19.8 billion to direct radio activity, including station operations, programming, and advertising-related jobs. Supplier industries add another $47.8 billion. The largest portion — nearly $370 billion — comes from radio’s stimulative effect on the wider economy, driven primarily by advertising that delivers price and product information to consumers at no cost.

That advertising function is identified as radio’s most powerful economic contribution. By efficiently distributing marketplace information, radio advertising improves consumer spending efficiency and encourages competition among businesses. The report estimates that dynamic alone supports more than 506,000 additional jobs nationwide.

State-level data highlights radio’s broad geographic reach. California leads with more than $51.4 billion in radio-driven economic activity and over 100,000 related jobs. Texas follows at $38.9 billion and more than 78,000 jobs. New York ($31.5 billion), Florida ($26.2 billion), and Illinois ($19.7 billion) also post significant totals, while Ohio accounts for nearly $20.9 billion in output and roughly 44,000 jobs.

Mid-sized and smaller states show strong per-capita influence, reflecting radio’s deep local roots. Woods & Poole projects stable radio revenue through at least 2028, concluding that radio’s economic contributions are likely to grow alongside the broader economy.

“Broadcasting is more than a business model; it is a civic model,” LeGeyt says. “This industry stands alone in its mission to inform, protect and uplift every community in America, regardless of ZIP code or income level.”

NBCuniversal Teams With AMC Theatres for Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics Viewing

0

NBCUniversal is once again turning movie theaters into Olympic viewing destinations, announcing plans to significantly expand live daytime coverage of the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics across AMC Theatres locations nationwide.

The company revealed that more than 150 AMC theaters will offer ticketed access to select live daytime Olympic broadcasts from NBC between February 6-22. The initiative builds on a similar effort during the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. About 110 AMC locations participated then. That effort helped introduce a communal viewing option beyond traditional home screens.

Beginning February 6, the same day as the Opening Ceremony, fans can gather inside participating AMC theaters. They will watch live Olympic competition unfold in real time from northern Italy.

NBCUniversal said the programming is expected to feature marquee Winter Games events, including figure skating, skiing, snowboarding, hockey and speed skating, presented with a cinematic experience designed to heighten the drama and emotion of the Games.

The expanded rollout reflects NBCUniversal’s continued push to extend Olympic coverage beyond linear television and streaming, while also giving AMC another opportunity to position its theaters as live event venues. The companies hope the large-screen setting and shared atmosphere will appeal to both casual viewers and devoted Olympic fans looking for a different way to experience the Games.

Tickets for the live Olympic screenings will be available starting January 23 through theater box offices and Fandango.

NBCUniversal’s return to theaters follows positive results from its Paris Olympics experiment, which demonstrated demand for live sports content in a theatrical environment. The Milan Cortina expansion represents a notable increase in scale, with more than 40 additional locations added compared to the 2024 effort.

The 2026 Winter Olympics will feature events staged across multiple regions in northern Italy, with Milan and Cortina serving as primary hosts. It will mark the second time Cortina has hosted the Winter Games, following the 1956 Olympics, and the fourth time Italy has hosted an Olympic Games overall. The most recent Winter Olympics held in Italy took place in Turin in 2006.

NBC and Peacock will serve as NBCUniversal’s primary platforms for comprehensive coverage of the Milan Cortina Games, which are scheduled for February 6-22, 2026. The Paralympic Winter Games will follow from March 6-15, 2026.

KIRO Newsradio 97.3 FM News Anchor Heather Bosch Exits

0

After more than seven years at KIRO Newsradio 97.3 FM, anchor Heather Bosch has announced that she has departed the Bonneville International Seattle news/talk station.

In a post on social media, Bosch shared that her contract wouldn’t be renewed by the organization.

“After decades as a successful broadcast journalist, the local radio station I worked for declined to renew my contract,” Bosch wrote. “They did provide a lovely cardboard box for me to put my most recent awards in, and my news director was kind enough to fetch my coat. ‘Realocating resources,’ I was told. They will not be backfilling my position.”

Heather Bosch re-joined KIRO Newsradio 97.3 FM in 2018. She had previously worked at the station from 1999 to 2011, before departing for CBS News Radio as an anchor/reporter role based in New York City. She has also worked as a freelance anchor for NPR.

Additionally, Bosch rejoined CBS News Radio as an anchor in 2024, working in a fill-in capacity. She has shared that she will continue in that role in spite of her exit from KIRO.

Kimo Jensen Announces Retirement From 103.7 KSON

0

103.7 KSON San Diego will soon close a significant chapter in its on-air history as longtime afternoon host Kimo Jensen prepares to step away from the microphone after more than three decades at the station.

Jensen, widely known to listeners as “the Smilin’ Hawaiian,” announced he will retire in mid-June and relocate to Italy with his wife, Shannon.

The decision brings an end to one of the longest-running and most recognizable tenures in the San Diego radio market, particularly within the country format.

The station confirmed the news on KSON’s morning show, where he reflected on a career that spanned multiple eras of radio and several ownership changes. While Jensen’s exit marks the end of his daily afternoon presence, KSON plans to celebrate his legacy in a big way.

On March 19, the station will host “Kimo’s Kegger,” a farewell concert event at The Sound in Del Mar. Country artist Rodney Atkins will headline the show, which is expected to draw longtime listeners and industry colleagues who have followed Jensen’s career over the years.

The event serves as both a sendoff and a thank-you to a host who helped shape KSON’s sound and community presence for decades.

Jensen’s relationship with KSON began in 1989, when he first joined the station and worked there through 1991. After leaving San Diego for a brief period, he returned to the market in the mid-1990s following a stint in mornings at Z90. That return would prove to be permanent, as Jensen went on to become a fixture in KSON’s afternoon daypart.

As Jensen prepares for his next chapter overseas, KSON listeners will have several more months to hear a familiar voice that has accompanied countless commutes, life milestones, and country hits along the way.

Jesse Watters: I’m Working at Not Coming Off So Condescending Toward Jessica Tarlov on The Five

2

Fox News’ The Five is often the highest-rated show on cable news, with co-hosts Jesse Watters and Jessica Tarlov often pitted against one another.

The two can often be at odds over any variety of topics in a given show, and Watters says he’s working on being a little nicer to his colleague.

While appearing on The Sage Steele Show, Watters admitted he can be condescending to her, and it’s something he’s cognizant of.

“I do come off condescending, and I’m working on that,” he shared. “Brit Hume actually told me, ‘Jesse, you have to stop interrupting Jessica so much because the audience does need to hear the other side.’ I’ve been trying to be more polite. You’re not even taking me seriously,” Watters said to Steele before saying others are worse than he is.

“You think I’m bad? Greg (Gutfeld)’s the worst. Greg’s bad. Greg yells at her. I try not to yell. I’ve come to the conclusion that I shouldn’t be yelling at women,” Watters continued. “When a man yells at a woman, he kind of loses a little masculinity, and that’s what the women want. They want to fight. They want to tear into each other. So I try, as calmly as I can, to say my thing and interrupt her less. You’re not even listening, are you? You don’t believe this. I’m trying to be a better person.”

When asked if he and Jessica Tarlov only spar on the show or if there’s a real-life rivalry between them, Jesse Watters admitted he is fond of his co-host.

“Jessica’s great … We used to go on Hannity together. He used to have Jess versus Jessica, and we’d do it at 9:00, then take the subway downtown after the show because we both lived downtown,” he shared. “Jessica and I are friendly. We don’t hang out on the weekends, but we’re good.”

Dan “Big Cat” Katz Blasts Golden Globe Award For Best Podcast Concept, Winner

0

Dan “Big Cat” Katz of Barstool Sports offered a blunt assessment of the Golden Globes’ new “Best Podcast” category during a recent appearance on the House Call podcast. Katz characterized the award as emblematic of Hollywood’s attempt to co-opt the growing podcasting industry, calling the move “stupid” and dismissing the honor as largely symbolic.

“The whole thing’s a joke,” Katz said. “Essentially, podcasts have become big. New Media has kind of eaten into TV shows and movies and stuff. It ate up late night. So now they’re like, ‘Well, we’re gonna have famous people do podcasts too, and then we’ll give them an award and be like, ‘Look, we’re podcasters too.’ It’s stupid.”

Katz is one half of the wildly popular Pardon My Take alongside co-host PFT Commentor. While Pardon My Take was originally cast as part of a wider amount of nominees, they did not make the final cut for the award handed out this past Sunday. Katz, who has long been outspoken about the state of the podcasting industry, described the medium itself as an unlikely candidate for traditional awards.

“No real podcaster should want to win a Golden Globe,” he said. “Podcasting is a joke. It’s a joke profession. It’s not real world. We’re not doing anything that’s like, special. We’re idiots talking to a mic, hopefully entertaining people. Why do you got to get an award for that?”

The comments came in response to the Golden Globes’ decision to honor Amy Poehler’s Good Hang as the first recipient of the award. Katz framed the selection as predictable. He pointed to Poehler’s celebrity status rather than the podcast’s merit as a reason for recognition.

“That whole thing was a joke. She’s been podcasting for like a half a year. So it’s all rigged, and it’s all Hollywood,” Katz said. “The Golden Globes [are] Hollywood’s elite, and the podcast of the year is also a Hollywood actress. No offense to Amy Poehler. She seems really nice. Her podcast very popular. So it’s not like a shot at her, it’s more like, this is what you came up with? Yeah, so whatever. Who cares.”

The Golden Globes’ foray into podcasting reflects a broader trend of legacy awards shows attempting to stay relevant amid shifts in media consumption. Streaming services, social media, and independent content creators have eroded traditional television audiences, prompting institutions like the Globes to acknowledge online formats.

Yet Katz’s remarks underscore a persistent tension: industry insiders may embrace podcasts as culturally influential, while those embedded in the medium itself often view the recognition as unnecessary or performative.

Peter Rosenberg Mocks Coverage of Potential Beef With Michael Kay on ESPN New York

0

ESPN New York host Peter Rosenberg pushed back Thursday against online headlines suggesting tension with fellow former co-host Michael Kay, using humor to lampoon the media’s appetite for conflict.

On Thursday’s episode of Don, Hahn & Rosenberg, the program mocked the coverage of the potential discourse, noting that outlets appeared eager to fill space.

“With all due respect, they got a lot of inches to fill. Okay, you guys were bored today,” Rosenberg said.

The remarks followed speculation stemming from Rosenberg’s recent praise of WWE commentator Joe Tessitore on his Cheap Heat wrestling podcast. Rosenberg called Tessitore “constantly flawless” and “the best point guard that I’ve maybe ever worked with,” prompting Kay, who previously co-hosted with Rosenberg on ESPN New York, to vent frustration in a text message Rosenberg later described as saying, “you’re dead to me.”

According to co-host Don La Greca, the disagreement was less about personal animosity than a perceived slight over Rosenberg’s compliment.

“He’s mad at Peter because Peter doesn’t think he’s the best at something. He didn’t disrespect him,” La Greca said. “You didn’t make him the best. That’s ridiculous.”

Rather than escalating, Rosenberg framed the episode’s discussion as a lesson in current media dynamics.

“If our crack staff here at ESPN New York and our radio station were worth the paper they were made on, they’d be taking this article running right to the New York Post,” he joked. “There’s nothing better than show beef than in because it’s all within the station. You’re not sending anyone anywhere else. You’re keeping it all right here.”

Rosenberg’s tongue-in-cheek take underscores a familiar reality in sports media. Personality-driven narratives often get amplified online, sometimes independent of any potential workplace friction. The program took the next couple of minutes to create other potential “beef-filled” headlines to draw attention to outlets online.

Kay, who moved to another time slot in 2025 to balance his role as the voice of the Yankees for YES Network, previously lamented that his off-air relationship with Rosenberg had cooled since their professional split.

Rosenberg, however, continued to emphasize a mix of respect and humor toward his former colleague, describing him as “the bride at every wedding and the corpse at every funeral. Everything has to be Michael!”

ESPN Announces Massive Coverage Plan for College Football Playoff National Championship Game

0

ESPN will turn South Florida into the center of the college football universe as its networks and digital platforms deliver more than 24 hours of live studio and on-site programming surrounding the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday at Hard Rock Stadium.

The wall-to-wall coverage begins today and runs through Tuesday, January 20, with content airing across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ACC Network and ESPN’s digital and social platforms. The multi-day presence culminates on Championship Monday, when ESPN deploys its most recognizable shows, personalities and reporters to provide comprehensive analysis, storytelling and real-time reaction from Miami.

College GameDay will close out its most-viewed regular season on record with a special edition live from Hard Rock Stadium beginning at 5 p.m. ET. Host Rece Davis anchors the set alongside analysts Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee and Nick Saban, while Jen Lada, Jess Sims, Pete Thamel and Stanford Steve Coughlin contribute reporting and insight. Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman will also join the broadcast as a guest analyst for the national championship.

Throughout the show, ESPN will lean into narrative-driven features that explore the people and programs shaping this year’s title game. Those segments include hometown storylines, deep dives into Miami’s historic swagger, a sit-down conversation with both head coaches and a closer look at Indiana’s improbable run to the sport’s biggest stage. Additional reporting examines how proximity and history could influence the atmosphere at what is technically a neutral-site championship.

ESPN’s studio programming extends well beyond GameDay. The Pat McAfee Show will broadcast live from Hard Rock Stadium from noon to 2 p.m. ET on ESPN, ESPN on YouTube and the ESPN App, with McAfee and his crew welcoming guests throughout the afternoon.

ACC Network will also maintain a strong on-site presence, featuring multiple editions of ACC Huddle, Inside ACCess and a dedicated alternate telecast of the championship game, all originating from Miami.

Digital platforms play a central role in ESPN’s coverage strategy as well. Countdown to the CFP National Championship will stream live from the field on ESPN YouTube, Facebook and the ESPN App, delivering pregame breakdowns, matchup analysis and live reports.

Following the game, The Wrap-Up will provide immediate postgame reaction, social media analysis and a season-in-review conversation to close out the college football calendar.

ABC’s Good Morning America will contribute national exposure throughout the weekend with live updates from Hard Rock Stadium, including a special post-championship edition anchored on the field. SportsCenter, First Take and several college football-focused studio shows will also originate from Miami, ensuring consistent coverage across ESPN’s programming ecosystem.

By combining live event access, studio analysis and digital-first storytelling, ESPN aims to deliver an immersive, multi-platform experience that matches the scale and significance of college football’s championship stage.

Yahoo Sports Adds Gold Medalists To Cover Milan-Cortina Olympic Games

0

Yahoo Sports is turning to some of the most accomplished Winter Olympians in history to strengthen its video coverage of the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games, assembling a trio of gold medalists to deliver analysis, storytelling, and athlete-driven perspective across multiple platforms.

Nathan Chen, Julia Mancuso, and Apolo Ohno will serve as on-air correspondents throughout the Games, providing event recaps, technical breakdowns, and behind-the-scenes features designed to help fans better understand both the competition and the culture surrounding the Olympics.

Collectively, the group represents 15 Olympic medals, including five golds, and brings experience across three of the Winter Games’ marquee sports.

Chen, the 2022 Olympic figure skating champion, will focus on figure skating coverage, offering analysis that goes beyond scores and standings. His segments will break down judging criteria, competitive strategy, and the mental preparation required to perform under Olympic pressure.

Mancuso, a four-time Olympic medalist in alpine skiing, will cover downhill, giant slalom, and super combined events, adding insight drawn from competing across three Olympic cycles.

Ohno, the most decorated U.S. Winter Olympian with eight medals in short-track speed skating, will analyze speed skating while also addressing the broader demands of elite Olympic competition.

In addition to competition recaps, the trio will produce feature content from Italy that highlights life around the Games. Those segments will focus on athlete routines, local culture, and the moments away from the venues that often shape the Olympic experience but rarely receive extended attention.

Yahoo Sports executives believe that approach will resonate with audiences looking for more context and personality alongside live results.

“Nathan, Julia, and Apolo know what it takes to compete — and win — on the world’s biggest stage,” said Sam Farber, Head of Yahoo Studios and Sports Content. “We look forward to them bringing their expertise and insights to fans across platforms during the Olympics.”

Their work will appear across Yahoo Sports’ digital ecosystem, including yahoosports.tv, YouTube, and social media platforms. Chen, Mancuso, and Ohno will also contribute to the newly launched Yahoo Sports Network free streaming TV channel, with remote appearances on the Yahoo Sports Daily live morning show serving as a centerpiece of that coverage strategy.
