Three race teams will be paying tribute to NASCAR legend Darrell Waltrip as he prepares to call his final race for Fox this weekend in Sonoma. Matt Dibenedetto, David Ragan, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will all have paint schemes on their car that honor Waltrip’s time as a racer.
Stenhouse’s Rousche Fenway #17 will don a paint scheme similar to one Waltrip used in the early 90s when he drove the #17. Stenhouse’s ride will still have its regular sponsors. The car will look similar to one Waltrip drove that bore the Western Auto logo.
DiBenedetto’s car will have a paint scheme similar to the one on Waltrip’s first car on the Cup circuit. Waltrip drove the 95 car until 1975.
Finally, David Ragan and Front Row Motorsports are going all in with Waltrip tributes. Not only will the #38 bare a paint scheme inspired by Waltrip’s 1997 “chrome car,” but there are special messages of thanks on the car. Those include #ThanksDW written across the side of the car and the NASCAR legend’s catchphrase “boogity, boogity, boogity!” painted on the hood.
Waltrip retired from racing after the 2000 season. He joined the Fox broadcast team the next season. He has not missed a race broadcast on Fox in 19 years. He announced his retirement in April.
