Bill Lyon spent 45 years writing about sports in Philadelphia. It was reported yesterday that the Philadelphia Inquirer columnist had died at age 81 after battles with both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Lyons covered multiple Super Bowls, World Series, Olympics, Masters, Stanley Cups, and Final Fours for the Inquirer as well as the Triple Crown and many boxing title fights. He first joined the paper as a business editor in 1972 before moving to the sports section a year later.
Despite his Alzheimer’s diagnosis, Lyon kept writing. He even documented his struggles with the disease and his outlook in a series of columns.
Several colleagues and proteges took to Twitter to publicly pay their respects to Bill Lyon. He was preceded in death by his wife Ethel, who passed away last year.
