After the sudden departure of Cris Carter earlier this year, FS1 is looking to overhaul First Things First. According to Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports, the network wants to turn the three hour debate show into something more in line with ESPN’s Get Up! or the NFL Network’s Good Morning Football.
FOX Sports brass see a bright future for Nick Wright, but believe the show needs someone that can bring some levity to the set as well. Damian Woody’s name has been thrown around to fill that role. 2020 is the final year on former Pro Bowler’s contract with ESPN. With no new deal finalized, it will be interesting to see how his broadcast future plays out.
Chris Canty has occupied the analyst’s chair on First Things First since Carter’s departure. The former New York Giants lineman’s time on the show has been seen as temporary by producers.
The goal is to create a stronger start to FS1’s broadcast day. The network has seen viewership of its studio programming grow over the last two years. According to McCarthy, the network would like to introduce Carter’s permanent replacement before First Things First heads to Miami for the Super Bowl in February.
