There isn’t much in the world of sports broadcasting that Bob Costas hasn’t done. The face of the network’s sports coverage for decades, Costas parted ways with NBC last year. While he still calls games and appears in specialty programming for MLB Network, many fans have wondered what Costas’s next move will be.
He addressed that in an interview with long-time sports radio host Mike Lindsley on the ML Sports Platter podcast. Costas said that he would continue his work with MLB Network, but there is plenty that he used to do at places like NBC and HBO that he would love to be able to do again.
“If I can find the right circumstance, [I’d like to] return to long-form interviews, both sports and non-sports,” he told Lindsley. “Something that has a journalistic component.”
Costas says he has loved the thrill of experiencing new things in the world of sports. He is in a phase of his career where he wants to be happy and satisfied.
“Now the focused has narrowed to where I only want to do the things of most interest to me and most appropriate to me at this point.”
It makes sense that Costas isn’t in a hurry to try something new. During his nearly 40 years with NBC Sports he covered just about every major sporting event, providing either play-by-play or hosting coverage.
During his time at the network, Costas covered the Winter and Summer Olympics, Super Bowls, the Stanley Cup Finals, the NBA Finals, major boxing matches, golf’s US Open, all three legs of horse racing’s Triple Crown, and the finale of the 2017 NASCAR season.
