John Murphy announced he’s departing One Bills Live, a weekday show on Entercom’s WGR 550 Radio in Buffalo, which is also simulcast on MSG Western New York. With the news, Murphy will remain the play-by-play voice of the Buffalo Bills Radio Network and their flagship WGR.
Murphy said the decision to leave the show was made mutually with Pegula Sports and Entertainment. According to a story by Alan Pergament of The Buffalo News, Murphy’s contract with PSE for One Bills Live is set to expire next month, but he has a separate deal with Entercom for his play-by-play gig.
“The events of the last couple months, I think have forced everybody, you guys included, to kind of take stock of what’s important, put things in perspective,” Murphy said during his final episode of One Bills Live, noting that he’d like to spend more time with his 11-month old grandson.
The 63-year old announcer was the host of One Bills Live for eight years, having worked in the NFL team’s radio booth for 32 years. Murphy served two tenures as the Bills radio analyst from 1984 – 1989 and again from 1994 – 2003. After the 2003 NFL season, Murphy took over as the team’s play-by-play voice, replacing Van Miller.
