Sports fans love to see previously great athletes recycled to create new content. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Michael Jordan are all athletes who continue to generate tremendous intrigue even though they’re past their prime or even retired.
Mike Tyson fits into that class of athlete and celebrity. In the last month, there’s been a buzz that the 53-year old former heavyweight champion could be prepping for a return to the ring. Earlier this week, longtime actor and pro wrestler David Arquette joined WEEI’s afternoon show OMF, where they discussed the prospect of Tyson fighting again.
“I’m so excited about his return,” Arquette told the trio of Glenn Ordway, Lou Merloni and Christian Fauria.
“That’s a real thing,” Arquette added after Fauria asked if he thinks Iron Mike’s return will actually happen. It was a bit of a surprising comment from Arquette, one that hinted he had more details on Tyson’s comeback. But the actor and wrestler said he was sworn to secrecy.
A few weeks ago, one 5-second training video of Tyson triggered multiple lucrative fight offers. Tyson later said he wants to box three or four round exhibitions for charity and made his possible return to the ring seem like more of a reality when he posted an intense training video that proclaimed, “I’m Back.”
“Did they announce who it was?” Arquette asked, hinting a fight may already be scheduled, before adding “I know who it is…and I know when it’s going to be.” According to Arquette, who recently returned to wrestling, Tyson has one fight left and he’s not alone in the sentiment. On Wednesday, UFC president Dana White confirmed to ESPN that Tyson has something lined up.
