The Southeastern Conference has introduced a new internship in honor of the late Edward Aschoff. Aschoff, a graduate of the University of Florida began working at ESPN covering college football until his shocking death last year.
The student selected for the internship each year will work in the conference’s communications department. He or she will work on projects that include both the conference and the SEC Network, which is owned by ESPN.
“We are pleased to be able to remember Edward Aschoff in an important way that will reflect his priorities of sharing knowledge and developing connections with the next generation of communications professionals,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a press release. “We will long remember Ed for his infectious smile and his tireless work ethic, for being a superior journalist but an even better person. My thanks go to his fiancee’ Katy Berteau and his family for sharing Ed with us and allowing us to remember him in a significant way.”
Aschoff was particularly popular amongst his peers. Many of them took to social media to voice their approval of the move.
Aschoff was 34 when he passed away in December. He succumbed to a case of pneumonia. Doctors later discovered that he had undiagnosed non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
