Local Sports Shows End With Cox Station Shuffle In Orlando

Cox Media Group is shuffling signals for some of its Orlando area stations. While the group will continue to run an ESPN Radio affiliate, all of the local shows on ESPN 580 have been cancelled.

WDBO, which had been heard on the 580 signal since 1932, moved off of the AM dial in 2011 to make way for a new ESPN Radio affiliate. At the time, the news/talk station also aired on 96.5 FM. The FM signal was the flagship station for the Orlando Magic.

The Magic moved to crosstown rival 96.9 FM the Game before the 2018-2019 season. It seemed as though ESPN 580 might have been living on borrowed time since then.

ESPN Radio will now be heard in Orlando on 94.5 HD2. Afternoon drive show Anez Sez has been cancelled, although Anez said in a post on the station’s Facebook page that both he and producer Nick “Nicky Football” Gryniewicz will remain with Cox Media.

Gryniewicz also hosted the night show Live, Local & Loud alongside Jerry Daniels. That show will continue on the 580 signal from 7-9 pm each weeknight.

The shuffle means the following:

  • WDBO moves off of 96.5. It goes back to 580 AM. It will also be heard on a translator signal at 107.3 FM.
  • Star 94.5 is Cox’s Urban AC station in Orlando. It’s HD2 signal will drop Spanish music for a national feed of ESPN Radio.
  • The Spanish format will move to 96.5 FM and rebrand as Éxitos 96.5.

  1. So where can I listen to ESPN radio on a national level now that it’s off AM 580. I listen daily! Thanks for the info

    • Looks like your only options are satellite radio or streaming over your phone. I know this is a COX decision but it feels like ESPN has been de-emphasizing radio for a while now. They replaced Stephen A. Smith’s show with an afternoon show that’s a rehash of the morning talking head shows!? Will Cain’s show was geared for right of center listeners with lukewarm takes. Destined to fail.

Wasn’t that long ago Orlando had 3 sports stations, down to one now.

  2. This stinks. Hard to believe that in a market as large as Orlando ESPN has no radio affiliate. Any idea if they will have a local radio affiliate and when might that happen. thanks

  3. You guys are screwing up. I have listened to Scott for years, and you just end the show with no warning??? Yea, that’s all we need is more political crap and less sports coverage to get our minds off the woes of the world.
    Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Is it true about 104.1 for ESPN? (The article states 94.5 HD2)
I hope it is true, FM 104.1 comes in strong and clear always. On regular radio, no need for HD radio, satellite or using up cell battery, I will add.

I whole heartedly agree with Micheal E Potter’s comment. Horrible time for coxMediaGroup to take away sports radio station in times like these. Did anyone hear this change was even happening!? Matters not of course.
    Poof, its gone.

Thanks Barrett Sports for the information.
